Rudraksha Can Protect The Earth

I have been observing from my childhood, that many people like pundits, saints are wearing Rudrakshas. I spent my life 44 years without knowing the value of real rudrakshas. The road side vendors of fake rudrakshas are degrading the value of real Rudrakshas.

The selfishness of human causing is the loss of Rudraksha trees from earth. Gradually these trees are vanishing from forests and from their holy locations.

I questioned myself why to where Rudrakshas. But I could not get right answer. Where as I understand that, there might be a great reason behind this.

I observed the paintings of Hindu God Lord Shiva, Mighty Hanuman by wearing Rudrakshas. I read shiva puranas and vishnu puranas mentioned about rudrakshas. We can see Saints, rishis with wearing rudrakshas. Rudraksha has important role in Hindu mythology. Rudraksha has greater importance in ayurveda, meditation and spiritual prayers.

Finally I understand that Rudrakshas have magnetic and spiritual power. This power protects us from evils and bad events. This power helps us to acquire knowledge. This power protects our health and body. The magnetic and spiritual power of Rudraksha balancing the mental and physical system of the saints.

I decided to purchase and wear real Rudrakshas. But when I decided I don’t know where the real ones available. Luckily a news channel Ntv telecasting a program of Rudrakshas every Sunday morning 9pm. Mr. Panduranga Rao who became familiar in the demonstrating and selling of Rudraksha, answering to many questions. Removing underarm hair

Most of the people like to live long but they want without any dependency. It is very difficult to live in elderly stage. Loss of memory, physical fitness problems, diseases surrounds us.

Unfortunately in most cases there is no respect for old age people. Even a at fifty years age also man does understand that he should not insult old age people.

Society is also not giving them honor. I saw in city buses how the insulted by conductors and young citizens. Even a young man does not give his seat to an elderly in bus. He does not feel how the old man can stand in the bus while running at a long distance.

An old woman, who sacrifice her entire life to her family is not getting honor after her retirement. Some wise sons and daughters admitting their elderly parents in old age homes. But they do not see how their parents are being treated by the trust organizers.

In some Government hospitals doctors, nurses, ward boys behaves rudely on old age people. They do not give respect and do not show patience to serve their old patients.

Even popular music directors, actors also suffered at their old age with out food and support from society.

Recently a woman won a case against her sons who cheated and occupied her property. But in most cases the old men coming out and becoming beggars or committing subsides. Last year I saw news in TV that an old man burned himself along with his home because of his son’s quarrel about his property.

What is Aerobic?

Aerobics is a form of physical exercise that combines rhythmic movement, stretching. Aerobic means "with oxygen" or "in the presence of oxygen." Aerobic activity trains the heart, lungs and cardiovascular system to process and deliver oxygen more quickly and efficiently to every part of the body.

It is usually performed to music and may be practiced in a group setting led by an instructor, although it can be done solo and without musical accompaniment.

Why Aerobic?

By the Aerobic exercises heart muscle becomes stronger and more efficient and a larger amount of blood can be pumped with each heartbeat. We can work longer, more vigorously and achieve a quicker recovery at the end of the aerobic session.

How to begin Aerobic?

You should not to start any kind of exercise suddenly and vigorously. Sudden and intensive exercise can cause more harm than good. It can lead to muscle injuries and sprains. You have to prepare your body to fit for doing exercises.

Walking is the best way to begin any exercise. Start with a little walk for a mile and increase it up to 3-4 miles per hour. Whenever you feel more comfortable with walking, start jogging, running or even aerobic or step classes. The most important thing is to be able to do any kind of aerobic exercise regularly. Therefore the best aerobic program is the one you enjoy and will stick to.

Warm-up

A warm-up helps your body prepare itself for exercise and reduces the chance of injury. The warm-up aims at raising the heart rate so that there is adequate blood flow to the muscles during activity. It also raises the temperature of the muscles so that they are able to withstand vigorous activity without sustaining injury. The warm-up exercise may be a slower version of the actual aerobic session. For example, you might want to walk before you jog, or do some aerobic dance movements before a step class. You should also aim at including all the muscles in your warm up.

If you see a cricket player never start his batting before warm-up. A boxer or a tennis player never starts his play without warm-up.

Cool-down is very important for any exercise.

After any exercise, the blood is pooled in the extremities, and the heart rate is increased. The cool-down aims to bring the heart rate down to near-normal and to get the blood circulating freely back to the heart. Stopping abruptly could result in fainting or place undue stress on the heart. The cool-down should also include stretching to help relax the tired muscles.

Away from junk food

Mallika Sarabhai (born 9 May 1954) is an activist and Indian Classical Dancer from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. Daughter of Classical Dancer Mrinalini Sarabhai and renowned Space Scientist Vikram Sarabhai, Mallika is an accomplished Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam dancer.

Mallika Sarabhai was born in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India in 1954 to Vikram Sarabhai and Mrinalini Sarabhai. She completed her MBA from IIM Ahmedabad in 1974 and Doctorate in Organisational Behaviour from the Gujarat University in 1976. She is a noted choreographer and dancer and has also acted in few Hindi and Gujarati films.

She started to learn dancing when she was young, and started her film career in parallel cinema, when she was 15. Mallika played the role of Draupadi in the Peter Brook's play The Mahabharata. Mallika has won many accolades during her long career, the Golden Star Award being one of them, which she won for the Best Dance Soloist, Theatre De Champs Elysees, Paris 1977. As well as a dancer, Sarabhai is a social activist. She, along with her mother, manages the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts located at Ahmedabad.

In 1989 she performed hard-hitting solo theatrical works, Shakti: The Power of Women. After it she directed and acteded in numerous productions reflecting current issues and awareness among people.

Mallika Sarabhai also wrote the script for the play Unsuni based on Harsh Mander's book Unheard Voices. Arvind Gaur later directed it as a play, with the same name. Darpana Academy has launched the people awareness movement through its production Unsuni which travels all over India.

In 2009 Mallika Sarabhai acted in Bertolt Brecht's Indian adaptation of The Good Person of Szechwan ( Ahmedabad ki Aurat Bhali-Ramkali) directed by Arvind Gaur in 34th Vikram Sarabhai International Art Festival.

Mrinalini Sarabhai (born 1918) is a celebrated Indian classical dancer, choreographer and instructor. She is the founder director of the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts, an institute for imparting training in dance, drama, music and puppetry, in the city of Ahmedabad. She has received many distinguished awards and citations in recognitions of her contribution to art. She has trained over 18,000 students in Bharatnatyam and Kathakali.

Mrinalini was born to Dr. Swaminathan, a Palghat Iyer, and Ammu Swaminathan who belonged to a famous Nair family called Vadakkath near Aanakkara close to Pattambi in present-day Palakkad district of central Kerala. She spent her childhood in Switzerland, where, she received her first lessons in Dalcroz, a Western technique of dance movements.

She was educated at Santiniketan under the guidance of Rabindranath Tagore where she realised her true calling. She then went for a short time to the United States where she enrolled in the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. On returning to India, she began her training in the south Indian classical dance form of Bharatanatyam under Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai and the classical dance-drama of Kathakali under the legendary Guru Thakazhi Kunchu Kurup.

Mrinalini got married in 1942 to the Indian physicist Vikram Sarabhai who is considered to be the Father of the Indian Space Program. She has a son, Karthikeya and a daughter Mallika who too went on to attain fame in dance and theatre. Mrinalini founded Darpana in Ahmedabad in 1948. A year later, she performed at the Théâtre national de Chaillot in Paris where she received a lot of critical acclaim.

Vikram Sarabhai allowed considerable freedom to Mrinalini to develop her own potential. They had a troubled marriage relationship. According to biographer Amrita Shah, Vikram Sarabhai had void in his personal life he sought to fill it by dedicating himself to applying science for social good.

Besides choreographing more than three hundred dance dramas. She has also written many novels, poetry, plays and stories for children. She was chairperson of the Gujarat State Handicrafts and Handloom Development Corporation Ltd. She is also one of the trustees of the Sarvodaya International Trust, an organization for promotion of Gandhian ideals, and is also the chairperson of the Nehru Foundation for Development (NFD). Her autobiography is titled Mrinalini Sarabhai: The Voice of the Heart.

Her father, Dr. Swaminathanan was a renowned barrister at the Madras High Court and principal of the Madras Law College. Her mother Ammu Swaminathan was a remarkable woman of her times, and a great freedom fighter. Her elder sister Capt. Dr. Lakshmi Sehgal was the commander-in-chief of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's 'Rani of Jhansi Regiment' of the Indian National Army Azad Hind Fauz. Her elder brother, Mr. Govind Swaminathan, was a famous barrister who practiced in Madras as a specialist in constitutional and criminal law apart from civil law and company law; he served as the attorney general for the State of Madras (Tamil Nadu) with great distinction.

Mrinalini Sarabhai has been awarded by the Indian government with the national civilian awards Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan in 1992 and the Padma Shri in 1965. She was honoured with the Degree of Doctor of Letters, honoris causa (LittD) by the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK in 1997. She was also the first Indian to receive the medal and Diploma of the French Archives Internationales de la Danse. She was nominated to the Executive Committee of the International Dance Council, Paris in 1990 [1] and awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship, New Delhi in 1994. She was presented with a gold medal by the Mexican Government for her choreography for the Ballet Folklorico of Mexico.

Rani Lakshmibai an Icon of Indian Independence Movement.

Rani Lakshmibai, The Queen of Jhansi born on c.19 November 1835 and she died on 17th June 1858. She is a symbol of resistance to British rule in India. Known as Jhansi Ki Rani, the queen of the Maratha-ruled princely state of Jhansi, was one of the leading figures of the Indian Rebellion of 1857. She was a firebrand who began the Indian Revolution against British Colonialism.

Her original name was Manikarnika at birth and nicknamed Manu, she was born on 19 November 1835 at Kashi (Varanasi) to a Marathi Karhade Brahmin family from Dwadashi, District Varansi.

She lost her mother at the age of four. She was educated at home. Her father Moropant Tambey worked at the court of Peshwa Baji Rao II at Bithur and then traveled to the court of Raja Bai Gangadhar Rao Newalkar, the Maharaja of Jhansi, when Manu was twenty three years old. She was married to Gangadhar Rao, the Raja of Jhansi, at the age of 14.

After her marriage, she was given the name Lakshmi Bai. Because of her father's influence at court, Rani Lakshmi Bai had more independence than most women, who were normally restricted to the zenana: she studied self defense, horsemanship, archery, and even formed her own army out of her female friends at court.

Rani Lakshmi Bai gave birth to a son in 1851, however this child died when he was about four months old. After the death of their son, the Raja and Rani of Jhansi adopted Damodar Rao. However, it is said that her husband the Raja never recovered from his son's death, and he died on 21 November 1853 of a broken heart.

Because Damodar Rao was adopted and not biologically related to the Raja, the East India Company, under Governor-General Lord Dalhousie, was able to install the Doctrine of Lapse, rejecting Rao's claim to the throne. Dalhousie then annexed Jhansi, saying that the throne had become "lapsed" and thus put Jhansi under his "protection". In March 1854, the Rani was given a pension of 60,000 rupees and ordered to leave the palace at the Jhansi fort.

Lakshmi Bai was determined not to give up Jhansi. She strengthened its defences and assembled a volunteer army. Women were also given military training. Rani's forces were joined by other warriors and their forces, often from nearby villages or other regions/kingdoms.

While this was happening in Jhansi, on May 10, 1857 the soldier Mutiny of India started in Meerut. This would become the starting point for the rebellion against the British. It began after rumours were put about that the new bullet casings for their Enfield rifles were coated with pork/beef fat, pigs being taboo to Muslims and cows sacred to Hindus and thus forbidden to eat. British commanders insisted on their use and started to discipline anyone who disobeyed. During this rebellion many British civilians, including women, and children were killed by the sepoys. The British wanted to end the rebellion quickly.

Meanwhile, unrest began to spread throughout India and in May of 1857, the First War of Indian Independence erupted in numerous pockets across the northern subcontinent. During this chaotic time, the British were forced to focus their attentions elsewhere, and Lakshmi Bai was essentially left to rule Jhansi alone. During this time, her qualities were repeatedly demonstrated as she was able swiftly and efficiently to lead her troops against skirmishes breaking out in Jhansi. Through this leadership Lakshmi Bai was able to keep Jhansi relatively calm and peaceful in the midst of the Empire’s unrest.

Up to this point, she had been hesitant to rebel against the British, and there is still some controversy over her role in the massacre of the British HEIC officials and their wives and children on the 8th June 1857 at Jokhan Bagh. Her hesitation finally ended when British troops arrived under Sir Hugh Rose and laid siege to Jhansi on 23rd March 1858. Rani Jhansi with her faithful warriors decided not to surrender. The fighting continued for about two weeks.

Shelling on Jhansi was very fierce. In the Jhansi army women were also carrying ammunition and were supplying food to the soldiers. Rani Lakshmi Bai was very active. She herself was inspecting the defense of the city. She rallied her troops around her and fought fiercely against the British. An army of 20,000, headed by the rebel leader Tatya Tope, was sent to relieve Jhansi and to take Lakshmi Bai to freedom.

However, the British, though numbering only 1,540 in the field so as not to break the siege, were better trained and disciplined than the “raw recruits,” and these inexperienced soldiers turned and fled shortly after the British began to attack on the 31st March.

Lakshmi Bai’s forces could not hold out and three days later the British were able to breach the city walls and capture the city. Yet Lakshmi Bai escaped over the wall at night and fled from her city, surrounded by her guards, many of whom were from her women’s military.

Along with the young Damodar Rao, the Rani decamped to Kalpi along with her forces where she joined other rebel forces, including those of Tatya Tope. The Rani and Tatya Tope moved on to Gwalior, where the combined rebel forces defeated the army of the Maharaja of Gwalior after his armies deserted to the rebel forces. They then occupied the strategic fort at Gwalior. However on the second day of fighting, on 18 June 1858, the Rani died.

She died on 18 June, 1858 during the battle for Gwalior with 8th Hussars that took place in Kotah-Ki-Serai near Phool Bagh area of Gwalior. She donned warrior's clothes and rode into battle to save Gwalior Fort, about 120 miles west of Lucknow in what is now the state of Uttar Pradesh. The British captured Gwalior three days later. In the report of the battle for Gwalior, General Sir Hugh Rose commented that the rani "remarkable for her beauty, cleverness and perseverance" had been "the most dangerous of all the rebel leaders".

However, the lack of a corpse to be convincingly identified as the Rani convinced Captain Rheese of the so called "bravest" regiment that she had not actually perished in the battle for Gwalior, stating publicly that:" The Queen of Jhansi is alive!". It is believed her funeral was arranged on same day near the spot where she was wounded. One of the her maidservants helped with the arrangement of quick funeral.

Because of her bravery, courage, and wisdom, and her progressive views on women's empowerment in 19th century India, and due to her sacrifices, she became an icon of Indian independence movement. The Rani was memorialized in bronze statues at both Jhansi and Gwalior, both of which portray her on horseback.

Her father, Moropant Tambey, was captured and hanged a few days after the fall of Jhansi. Her adopted son, Damodar Rao, was given a pension by the British Raj and cared for, although he never received his inheritance.

Starting his career in 1944, Kumar has starred in some of the biggest commercially successful films from the late 1940s, 1950s, 1960s and 1980s. His performances have been regarded as the epitome of emoting in Indian Cinema. He was the first actor to receive a Filmfare Best Actor Award amd holds the record for most number of Filmfare Awards won for that category.

Though he has done all kinds of films - he balanced a wide variety of roles such as the intense Andaz (1949) with the swashbuckling Aan (1952), the dramatic Devdas (1955) with the comical Azaad (1955) and the historical romance Mughal E Azam (1960) with the social Ganga Jamuna (1961). In the 1970s roles dried up for Kumar and after 1976 he left films for a five year break. In 1981 he returned with a character role in the blockbuster film Kranti and continued his career playing central character roles in hits such as Shakti (1982), Karma (1986) and Saudagar (1991). He has since retired from the industry.

Early Life
He was born as Muhammad Yusuf Khan, in Qissa Khwani Bazaar in Peshawar, now in Pakistan, in an Afghan family of twelve children. His father was based in Devlali in Maharashtra near Mumbai during the 1930s, and later relocated to Bombay (now Mumbai) after the Partition of India. Yusuf Khan moved to Pune and started off with his canteen business and supplying dry fruits. There he was spotted by a leading actress of those years, Devika Rani, who was also the wife of the founder of Bombay Talkies, Himanshu Rai, and helped his entry into the Bollywood film industry. She also gave him the screen name of Dilip Kumar.

Film Career
His first film Jwar Bhata, was released in 1944 which went unnoticed. In 1947 he shot to prominence with the film Jugnu which was his first major hit. In 1949, he co-starred with Raj Kapoor in the film Andaz, which went to become a huge success and made him a star. Throughout the 1950s he was one of the biggest stars of Bollywood along with Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand. He became known for playing tragic roles in popular films such as Deedar (1951), Amar (1954), Devdas (1955) and Madhumati (1958) which earned him the title of "tragedy king".

He was also successful in playing lighthearted roles such as playing a swashbuckling peasant in Aan (1952), a comedy role in Azaad (1955) and the social musical film Naya Daur (1957). The 1960 historical film Mughal-e-Azam which is as of 2007, the second highest grossing film in Hindi film history[4] had him play the role of the Mughal crown-prince Jehangir, the son of Akbar.

In 1961 he produced and starred in the hit Ganga Jamuna in which he and his real-life brother Nasir Khan] played the title roles. Despite the film's success he did not produce any film after this. Dilip had a narrow brush with international fame in 1962, when British director David Lean offered him the role of Sherif Ali in his 1962 blockbuster, Lawrence of Arabia. However, Kumar declined the part. The role eventually went to Omar Sharif, the Egyptian actor. After a period of box office flops in the mid 1960s, he bounced back when he played a dual role of twin brothers separated at birth in the film Ram Aur Shyam (1967) which was one of the biggest box office hits of the year. The success of Ram Aur Shyam spawned a number of remakes and imitators.

In the 1970s Kumar acted in fewer films as newer actors such as Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan had began to take the spotlight. Many of Kumar's films failed at the box office during this period and after the release of his 1976 film Bairaag in which he played triple roles, he took a five year break from acting.

He made a comeback in 1981 with the multi-starrer box office hit Kranti which was the biggest hit of the year. He went onto play character roles as an elderly family patriarch or a police officer in a string of box office hits including Shakti (1982), Vidhaata (1982) and Karma (1986). In his last major successful film, Saudagar (1991) he appeared alongside another legendary actor Raaj Kumar after three decades since they last appeared together in Paigham (1959)

In 1992 he won the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the Hindi film industry for over four decades.

After four years hiatus, in 1996 he was back in the limelight after he was attached to make his directorial debut with a film titled Kalinga but the film was shelved soon after. He made his last film appearance in the box office flop Qila (1998) and has since retired from the film industry although he has continued to receive film offers in recent years but refused them. In 2002 he was attached to star in a film titled Asar - The Impact which was eventually shelved due to his indifferent health.

Some of his older films have been shown over and over again on television or cherished on videotape and DVD. A few of them, such as Devdas and Ram Aur Shyam have been re-made several times. His 1960 film Mughal-e-Azam, which was originally released in black-and-white with some color scenes in the latter half of the film, was fully colorized in 2004 and re-released. Public life
He has been active in efforts to bring the people of India and Pakistan closer together. He has been a member of the upper house of Parliament since 2000 and is known for his extensive charity work..

He was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994. In 1998 he was awarded the Nishan-e-Imtiaz, the highest civilian award conferred by the government of Pakistan. He is the second Indian to receive the award; the first was former Indian prime minister Morarji Desai. At the time of Kargil War Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray urged Dilip Kumar to return Nishan-e-Pakistan . Mr Thackeray said Dilip Kumar must give back the award as a mark of protest for Pakistan's intrusion into Indian soil in May. "He must return Nishan-e-Pakistan following that country's blatant aggression on Indian soil" , but Mr. Kumar held his ground. He refused, saying:

"We need to look at this a little rationally. This award is not more important to me than our national interest. If it affects national interest, why would I want to hang on to it? But what does the award’s citation say? Does it say that this has been given to Dilip Kumar for his achievements in films? No, films are just a vocation for me. I do the best I can. This award was given to me for the humane activities to which I have dedicated myself. I have worked for the poor, I have worked for many years to bridge the cultural and communal gaps between India and Pakistan. Politics and religion have created these boundaries. I have striven to bring the two people together in whatever way I could. Tell me, what does any of this have to do with the Kargil conflict?"

In 1980, he was appointed Sheriff of Mumbai, an honorary position.

Personal life and family
Dilip Kumar's younger brother Nasir Khan was also an actor and appeared opposite him in Ganga Jamuna (1961) and Bairaag (1976) as well as some other films in the late 1940s and 1950s. His career was not as successful however. He died in 1974. Nasir Khan's son Ayub Khan is also currently an actor in the industry. Nasir Khan's wife was 1950s actress Begum Para who is making a comeback to films after 50 years in the film Saawariya in 2007.

Dilip Kumar's siblings who are still alive include brothers Ehsan Khan and Aslam Khan who live in Mumbai, a sister Farida who lives in Fresno, California.

Dilip Kumar's first romantic interest was rumored to be the already married Kamini Kaushal. Then Kumar was said to be romantically linked to the actress Madhubala. It is claimed that Madhubala's family would not allow the couple to marry; some conjecture that this was because Madhubala was the main source of income for her family.

Kumar and Madhubala were to appear together in Naya Daur, but Madhubala's father refused to allow his daughter to act with Kumar. The producer B.R. Chopra took Madhubala to court and Dilip Kumar testified against her. The former sweethearts were now on extremely bad terms. This complicated work on the film Mughal-E-Azam, which had started filming before the court case. It is said that Kumar and Madhubala, who were supposed to portray persecuted lovers, resisted filming any more love scenes.

Dilip Kumar married actress and "beauty queen" Saira Banu in 1966 when he was aged 44 and she was 22. At the time, gossip columnists predicted doom for the high-profile couple, but the union has been one of the longest lasting marriages in Bollywood. The marriage was briefly under threat when Kumar married a woman called Asma in 1980 but the marriage was quickly dissolved.

on September 26^;Dhilip Kumar was admitted in Apollo Hospital due to complication in urinary infection. But, sooner the actor was back to the normal condition and got discharged from the Hospital as doctors certified him as perfectly alright.

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is an Excellent book on the philosophy of yoga

Swami Satchidananda's book on the Sutras is one of the best for digging into the background and foundations of the Sutras, and his commentary, unlike Iyengar's and most other eastern commentaries, is clear, simple and easy to understand.

Swami Satchidananda is clearly in touch with the truth that he is illuminating with this book, and it's also clear from the powerful tone of authority with which he writes that he has reached the state of awaking which is the end purpose of the Sutras, but it seems too immersed in the history and culture of Hinduism to be fully appreciated and grasped by a westerm mind conditioned by concepts, ideas and images that are vastly different from the eastern traditions.

So the book does not have a deep and profound illuminating impact as has McAfee's book on the sutras - "Beyond the Siddhis". But it is rich in historical information and its tone is true to the purpose of the Sutras. I would recommend it for for all aspiring yogis.

The sutras are beautifully explained in layman terms with ample annotations. The sutras in samadhi pada and sadhana pada are covered extensively.
Whenever there was a discrepency in the translation among different authors (such as sutras 18,19,33 of sadhana pada, which have been interpreted very differently) I found the translation and explanation in this book to be most logical, intuitive and complete.

Beas
The second easternmost of the “five rivers” that give the Punjab
its name, the Beas river rises in the Himalayas in central Himachal Pradesh
state and flows for some 290 mi (470 km) to the Sutlej River in western Punjab
state. The river was also known as Arjiki or Vipas to the ancient Indians and
the Hyphasis to the Ancient Greeks. The present name Beas is thought to be a
corruption of the word Vyas,the name of Veda Vyasa, the author of the great
Hindu epic, the Mahabharata. The river is sometimes also referred to as Vipasha
in Himachal, especially by the scholars. The Beas River marks the eastern-most
border of Alexander the Great's conquests in 326 BC. The river begins at the
Rohtang Pass in the state of Himachal Pradesh, and merges with the Sutlej at
Harike Pattan south of Amritsar in Punjab, India. The Sutlej continues into
Pakistani Punjab and joins the Chenab River to form the Panjnad River; the latter
joins the Indus River at Mithankot. The waters of the Beas and Sutlej rivers
are allocated to India under the Indus Waters Treaty between India and Pakistan.

Brahmaputra
Brahmaputra is a major river of South Asia. It flows some 1,800 miles (2,900
kilometers) from its source in the Himalayas to its confluence with the Ganga
River, after which the mingled waters of the two rivers join the Bay of Bengal.
Along its course it passes through the Tibet Region of China, the Indian states
of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, and Bangladesh.
For most of its length, the river serves as an important inland waterway. Brahmaputra
is not, however, navigable between the mountains of Tibet and the plains of
India, and not until 1901 it was not known that Tsangpo and Bramhaputra are
indeed the same river.
In its lower course, the river is both a creator and a destroyer -- depositing
huge quantities of fertile soil but also causing disastrous and frequent floods.

Kaveri River
The Kaveri River is one of the major rivers of India, which is considered sacred
by Hindus. The river originates at Talakaveri in the Western Ghats in the state
of Karnataka, flows generally south and east through Karnataka and Tamil Nadu
and across the southern Deccan plateau through the southeastern lowlands, emptying
into the Bay of Bengal through two principal mouths.
The Kaveri River basin is estimated to be 27,700 square miles with many tributaries
including the Shimsa River, the Hemavati River, the Arkavathy River, Honnuhole
River, Lakshmana Tirtha River, Kabini River, Bhavani River, the Lokapavani River,
the Noyyal River and the Amaravati River. Rising in southwestern Karnataka state,
it flows southeast some 475 mi (765 km) to enter the Bay of Bengal. East of
the city of Mysore it forms the island of Sivasamudra, on either side of which
are the scenic Sivasamudram Falls that descend about 320 ft (100 m).[1] The
river is the source for an extensive irrigation system and for hydroelectric
power.[2] The river has supported irrigated agriculture for centuries and served
as the lifeblood of the ancient kingdoms and modern cities of South India.

Chambal River
The Chambal River is a tributary of the Yamuna River in central India. The
river flows north-northeast through Madhya Pradesh, running for a time through
Rajasthan, then forming the boundary between Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh before
turning southeast to join the Yamuna in Uttar Pradesh state.
It is a perennial river and originates at Manpura, south of Mhow town, near
Indore, on the south slope of the Vindhya Range in Madhya Pradesh. The Chambal
and its tributaries drain the Malwa region of northwestern Madhya Pradesh, while
its tributary the Banas, which rises in the Aravalli Range, drains southeastern
Rajasthan. The Chambal ends a confluence of five rivers, including the Chambal,
Kwari, Yamuna, Sind, Pahuj, at Pachnada near Bhareh in Uttar Pradesh state,
at the border of Bhind and Etawah districts.

Ganga River
The Ganges originates in the Himalayas at the confluence of five headstreams
– the Bhagirathi, Mandakini, Alaknanda, Dhauliganga, and Pindar at Devaprayag
in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. Out of the five, the Bhagirathi is held
to be the source stream originating at the Gangotri Glacier at an elevation
of 7,756 m (25,446 ft). The streams are fed by melting snow and ice from glaciers
including glaciers from peaks such as Nanda Devi and Kamet.
After travelling 200 km through the Himalayas, the Ganges emerges at the pilgrimage
town of Haridwar in the Shiwalik Hills. At Haridwar, a dam diverts some of its
waters into the Ganges Canal, which links the Ganges with its main tributary,
the Yamuna. The Ganges which till this point flows in a south-western direction
now begins to flow in a south-eastern direction through the plains northern
India.

From Haridwar the river follows an 800 km (500 mi) winding course passing through
the city of Kanpur, before being joined by the Yamuna from the southwest at
Allahabad. This point, known as the Sangam, is a sacred place in Hinduism. According
to ancient Hindu texts, a third river, the mythical Sarasvati River is believed
to meet the two rivers at this point.

Joined by numerous rives such as the Kosi, Son, Gandak and Ghaghra, the Ganges
forms a formidable current in the stretch between Allahabad and Malda in West
Bengal. On its way it passes the towns of Mirzapur, Varanasi, Patna and Bhagalpur.
At Bhagalpur, the river meanders past the Rajmahal Hills, and beings to change
course southwards. At Pakaur, the river begins its first attrition with the
branching away of it's first distributary, the River Bhagirathi, which goes
on to form the River Hooghly. Close to the border with Bangladesh, the Farakka
Barrage, built in 1974 controls the flow of the Ganges, diverting some of the
water into a feeder canal linking the Hooghly to keep it relatively silt free.
After entering Bangladesh, the main branch of the Ganges is known as Padma
River till it is joined by the Jamuna River the largest distributary of the
Brahmaputra. Further downstream, the Ganges is fed by the Meghna River, the
second largest distributary of the Brahmaputra and takes on its name. Fanning
out into the 350 km (220 mi) wide Ganges Delta, it empties out into the Bay
of Bengal. Only two rivers, the Amazon and Congo have a higher discharge.

Godavari River
The Godavari River is a major waterway in central India, originating in the
Western Ghats and flowing eastwardly across the Deccan Plateau between the states
of Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, then crossing the latter state and turning
to flow in a southeast direction until it empties into the Bay of Bengal through
two mouths. Its tributaries include Indravati River, Manjira River, Bindusara
River and Sabari River.

Although the river arises only 80 kilometres from the Arabian Sea, it flows
1,465 km to empty into the Bay of Bengal. Just above Rajahmundry there is a
dam that provides water for irrigation and the generation of hydroelectricity.
Most of the river’s water is drawn for irrigation purposes. Below Rajahmundry,
the river divides into two streams that widen into a large river delta which
has an extensive navigable irrigation-canal system, Dowleswaram Barrage that
links the region to the Krishna River delta to the southwest.
The Godavari River has a drainage area of 4,405 sq.km that includes more that
one state. The Manjra river is its major tributary.

Gomathi River
The Gomati River is a small river in Rajasthan state of western India. It originates
in the hills of central Udaipur District, flowing south to join the Som River
in the southern part of the district. The river was dammed in the 17th century
to create Dhebar Lake, also known as Jaisamand Lake, which has an area of 50
km².

Indus River
The Indus River is the longest and most important river in Pakistan and one
of the most important rivers on the Indian subcontinent. Originating in the
Tibetan plateau in the vicinity of Lake Mansarovar, the river runs a course
through in Jammu and Kashmir and Northern Areas, flowing through the North in
a southernly direction along the entire length of country, to merge into the
Arabian Sea near Pakistan's port city Karachi. The total length of the river
is 3200 km (1988 miles). The river has a total drainage area exceeding 450,000
square miles. The river's estimated annual flow stands at around 207 cubic kilometres.
Beginning at the heights of the world with glaciers, the river feeds the ecosystem
of temperate forests, plains and arid countryside. Together with the rivers
Chenab, Ravi, Sutlej, Jhelum, Beas and the extinct Sarasvati River, the Indus
forms the Sapta Sindhu ("Seven Rivers") delta in the Sindh province
of Pakistan. It has 20 major tributaries.

The Indus provides the key water resources for the economy of Pakistan - especially
the breadbasket of Punjab province, which accounts for most of the nation's
agricultural production, and Sindh. It also supports many heavy industries and
provides the main supply of potable water in Pakistan.

The ultimate source of the Indus is in Tibet; it begins at the confluence of
the Sengge and Gar rivers that drain the Nganglong Kangri and Gangdise Shan
mountain ranges. The Indus then flows northwest through Ladakh-Baltistan into
Gilgit, just south of the Karakoram range. The Shyok, Shigar and Gilgit streams
carry glacieral waters into the main river. It gradually bends to the south,
coming out of the hills between Peshawar and Rawalpindi. The Indus passes gigantic
gorges (15,000-17,000 feet) near the Nanga Parbat massif It swiftly flows across
Hazara, and is dammed at the Tarbela Reservoir. The Kabul River joins it near
Attock. The remainder of its route to the sea is in plains of the Punjab and
Sind, and the river becomes slow-flowing and highly braided. It is joined by
Panjnad River at Mithankot. Beyond this confluence, the river, at one time,
was named as Satnad River (sat = seven, nadi = river) as the river was now carrying
the waters of Kabul River, Indus River and the five Punjab rivers. Passing by
Jamshoro, it ends in a large delta to the east of Thatta.

The Indus is one of the few rivers in the world that exhibit a tidal bore.
The Indus system is largely fed by the snows and glaciers of the Karakoram,
Hindu Kush and Himalayan ranges of Tibet, Kashmir and Northern Areas of Pakistan.
The flow of the river is also determined by the seasons - it diminishes greatly
in the winter, while flooding its banks in the monsoon months from July to September.
There is also evidence of a steady shift in the course of the river since prehistoric
times - it deviated westwards from flowing into the Rann of Kutch. It is the
Official and National River of Pakistan in Urdu as Qaumi Daryaa and Sindhi it
is called Daryaa Badshah ,The King River.

Jehlum River
Jehlum River or Jhelum River is the largest and most western of the five rivers
of Punjab, and passes through Jhelum District. It is a tributary of the Indus
River.

Kali
The Kali River originates from the Greater Himalayas at Kalapaani at an altitude
of 3600 m, in the Pithoragarh District of Uttarakhand, India. The river is named
after the Goddess Kali whose temple is situated in Kalapaani near the Lipu-Lekh
pass at the border between India and Tibet. On its upper course, this river
forms India's continuous eastern boundary with Nepal.

The Kali river joins with the Gori Ganga at Jauljibi, a place famous for its
annual trade fair. It the joins with the Saryu river at Pancheshwar. The area
around Pancheshwar is called 'Kali Kumaon'. Kali descends in plains and called
by the name of Sharda.

The Pancheswar Dam, a joint venture with Nepal for irrigation and hydro-electric
power generation will soon be constructed on the Kali. The Tanakpur Hydroelectric
Project is also being built by the Uttarakhand Irrigation Department, with a
dam on the river near the town of Tanakpur in the district of Champawat.

Krishna River
The River Krishna (meaning "dark" (feminine) in Sanskrit, also called
the Krishnaveni, is one of the longest rivers of India (about 1300 km in length).
It originates from Mahabaleswar in Maharashtra in the West and meets the Bay
of Bengal at Hamasaladeevi in Andhra Pradesh, on the East coast. It also flows
through the state of Karnataka. The delta of the river is one the most fertile
regions in India and was the home to ancient Satavahana and Ikshvaku kings.
The legendary source of the river is a spout from the mouth of a statue of
a cow in the ancient temple of Mahadev in Mahabaleshwar. Legend has it that
Krishna is Lord Vishnu himself as a result of a curse on the trimurtis by Savitri.
Also, its tributaries Venna and Koyana are said to be Siva and Brahma themselves.
An interesting thing to notice is that 4 other rivers come out from the cow
(bull's) mouth apart from Krishna and they all travel some distance before merging
into Krishna. The rivers are Koyana, Venna(Veni), Savitri and Gayatri.
Ecologically, this is one of the disastrous rivers in the world, in that it
causes heavy soil erosion during the monsoon season. It flows fast and furious,
often reaching depths of over 75 feet. Ironically, there is a saying in Marathi
(language of Maharashtra) "sunt vaahate Krishnamaai" which means "quiet
flows Krishna". This term is also used to describe how a person should
be, as quiet as Krishna. But, in reality, Krishna causes a high degree of erosion
between June and August. During this time, Krishna takes fertile soil from Maharashtra,
Karnataka and western Andhra Pradesh towards the delta region.

Mandovi River
The Mandovi River, is described as the lifeline of the state of Goa, India.
The river, originating at Jamboti, with its cerulean waters and Dudhsagar Falls
and Varapoha Falls is also known as the Gomati in a few places, has its origin
at Bhimgad in the Western Ghats. Mandovi, along with the Zuari River, form the
two primary rivers in the state. In the state of Goa, the river has a length
of 77 kilometres.

The Mandovi enters Goa from the north via the Sattari taluka. The Mandovi flows
through Cumbarjua, Divadi and Chodné along the way. The waters of the
Mandovi and Zuari both flush out into the Arabian Sea at a common point at Cabo
Aguada forming the Marmogoa harbour. Panaji, the state capital and Old Goa,
the former capital of Goa, are both situated on the left bank of the Mandovi.

The river Mapusa is a tributary of the Mandovi.
The Cumbarjuem Canal, which links both rivers, has made the interiors of the
Mandovi accessible to ships which ferry iron ore, Goa's prime mineral, mined
in the eastern hills. Three large freshwater isles — Divar, Chorao and
Vashee are present in the Mandovi near the town of Old Goa. The island of Chorao,
is home to the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, named after the renowned ornithologist
Salim Ali. A regular ferry transports the inhabitants between the isles to the
mainland.

Spanning across the Mandovi River near Panjim is the majestic Mandovi Bridge.
The bridge was notorious for its collapses in the 1980s before a new bridge
was constructed to ferry heavy transport vehicles. The Mandovi Bridge links
the towns of Panjim to Betim.

During the winter months, the peak tourist season, special dusk cruises on
the Mandovi complete with serenading bands add to the charm of the river.

Narmada River
The Narmada or Nerbudda (Narbada) is a river in central India in Indian subcontinent.
It forms the traditional boundary between North India and South India, and is
a total of 1,289 km (801 mi) long. It is one of only three major rivers in pensinsular
India that run from east to west, along with the Tapti and the Mahi river. It
is the only river in India that flows in a rift valley. It rises on the summit
of Amarkantak Hill in Madhya Pradesh state, and for the first 320 kilometres
(200 miles) of its course winds among the Mandla Hills, which form the head
of the Satpura Range; then at Jabalpur, passing through the 'Marble Rocks',
it enters the Narmada Valley between the Vindhya and Satpura ranges, and pursues
a direct westerly course to the Gulf of Cambay. It flows through the states
of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat, and empties into the Arabian Sea
in the Bharuch District of Gujarat.

The Narmada Valley is a graben, a layered block of the earth's crust that dropped
down relative to the blocks on either side due to ancient spreading of the earth's
crust. Two normal faults, known as the Narmada North fault and Narmada South
fault, parallel the river's course, and mark the boundary between the Narmada
block and the Vindhya and Satpura blocks or horsts which rose relative to the
Narmada Graben. The Narmada's watershed includes the northern slopes of the
Satpuras, and the steep southern slope of the Vindhyas, but not the Vindhyan
tableland, the streams from which flow into the Ganges and Yamuna. The Narmada
valley is considered extremely important for paleontological studies in India.
Several dinosaur fossils have been found in the area including Titanosaurus
indicus found in 1877 by Richard Lydekker and the recently discovered Rajasaurus
narmadensis.

The Narmada river is considered extremely holy by hindus. It is said that just
the sight of the river is enough to wash away all sins. The river has beautiful
ghats built on its banks in Hoshangabad. Its longest tributary is the Tawa,
which joins the Narmada at Bandra Bhan in Hoshangabad District, Madhya Pradesh.
After leaving Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, the river widens out in the fertile
district of Bharuch. Below Bharuch city it forms a 20 kilometre wide estuary
where it enters the Gulf of Cambay. The Narmada river is not only used for irrigation,
but for navigation. In the rainy season boats of considerable size sail about
100 kilometres above Bharuch city. Seagoing vessels of about 70 tons frequent
the port of Bharuch, but they are entirely dependent on the tide.

Periyar River
The Periyar River is the longest river in the state of Kerala in India with
a length of 244 km. The river is also called The lifeline of Kerala as it is
one of the few perennial rivers of Kerala. It generates the major chunk of electrical
power for the state from its many big and small hydroelectric projects. Its
water provides drinking water for the major towns.

Ravi River
The Ravi River is a river in India and Pakistan. It is one of the five rivers
which give Punjab its name. The Ravi was known as Parushani or Iravati to Indians
in Vedic times and Hydraotes to the Ancient Greeks. It originates in the Himalayas
in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh following a north-westerly course.
It turns to the south-west, near Dalhousie, and then cuts a gorge in the Dhaola
Dhar range entering the Punjab plain near Madhopur. It then flows along the
Indo-Pak border for some distance before entering Pakistan and joining the Chenab
river. The total length of the river is about 720 km. The waters of the Ravi
river are allocated to India under the Indus Waters Treaty between India and
Pakistan. It is also called 'The river of Lahore' since that great city is located
on its eastern bank. On its western bank is located the famous tomb of Jahangir.

Sharavathi River
The Sharavathi is a river flowing through Karnataka state, India. The river
originates at Ambuthirtha in Thirthahalli taluk, flows north-west through the
Western Ghats forming the Jog Falls before joining the Arabian Sea at Honavar.
The Linganmakki Dam was built across the river by the British, creating a huge
reservoir to store water for times of drought.

The hydroelectric power plants, Mahatma Gandhi Hydroelectric Power Station
and the Sharavati Valley Project, are built on this river. These form a significant
portion of the electricity supply for the state of Karnataka in India.
The Sharavathi river basin is rich in biodiversity. In a survey conducted in
the basin, 23 amphibians belonging to the families of Bufonidae, Ichthyophiidae,
Microhylidae, Ranidae and Rhacophoridae were recorded. Out of these 23 amphibians,
15 species are endemic to the Western Ghats.

Sutlej River
Sutlej River is the longest of the five rivers that flow through Indian Punjab
in northern India. Its source is in Tibet near Mount Kailash and its terminus
in Pakistani Punjab. It is the easternmost afluent of the Punjab, and it receives
the Beas River in the state of Punjab, India and continues into Pakistan to
join the Chenab River to form the Panjnad River, which further down its course
joins the Indus River at Mithankot.

The Sutlej was known as Shatadru or Su?udri to Indians in Vedic period and
Zaradros or Hesidros to the Greeks, and Sydrus to the Romans.

The waters of the river are allocated to India under the Indus Waters Treaty
between India and Pakistan. At present, most of its water is diverted to irrigation
canals and used up in India. The Bhakra-Nangal Dam is a huge multipurpose
dam on the river.

There is substantial evidence to indicate that prior to 1700 B.C. the Sutlej
was once an important tributary of the Sarasvati River, instead of the Indus
River. It is believed that tectonic activity created elevation changes that
redirected the Sutlej from southeast to southwest. Once flowing in its new westward
direction, the river eventually joined the Beas river. As a result, the mighty
Sarasvati River began to dry up, causing the desertification of Cholistan and
Sindh, as well as the abandonment of numerous ancient human settlements along
its banks.

Tapti River
The Tapti River (also Tapi River) is a river in central India. It is one of
the major rivers of peninsular India with a length of around 724 km. It is one
of only three rivers - the others being the Narmada River and the Mahi River
that runs from East to West.

The river rises in the Eastern Satpura Range of Southern Madhya Pradesh state,
and flows westward, draining Madhya Pradesh's Nimar region, Maharashtra's Kandesh
and east Vidarbha regions in the northwest corner of the Deccan Plateau and
South Gujarat before emptying into the Gulf of Cambay of the Arabian Sea, in
the State of Gujarat. The Western Ghats or Sahyadri range starts south of the
Tapti River near the border of Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Tungabhadra RiverThe Tungabhadra River is a sacred river in southern India that flows through
the states of Karnataka and part of Andhra Pradesh to merge with the larger
Krishna River in Andhra Pradesh. It is the chief tributary of the Krishna
River. In the epic Ramayana Tungabhadra river was known by the name of Pampa
(though another river in Kerala now bears the name Pampa.)

Yamuna River
Yamuna is a major river of northern India, with a total length of around 1370
km. It is the largest tributary of the Ganga. Its source is at Yamunotri, in
the Uttarakhand Himalaya,which is north of Haridwar in the Himalayan Mountains.
It flows through the states of Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, before merging
with the Ganges at Allahabad. The cities of Delhi, Mathura and Agra lie on its
banks. The major tributaries of this river are the Tons, Chambal, Betwa, and
Ken; with the Tons being the largest. A canal is currently being built between
the Sutlej and Yamuna rivers, known as the SLY

Mother Teresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Skopje*, Macedonia, on August 27, 1910. Her family was of Albanian descent. At the age of twelve, she felt strongly the call of God. She knew she had to be a missionary to spread the love of Christ. At the age of eighteen she left her parental home in Skopje and joined the Sisters of Loreto, an Irish community of nuns with missions in India. After a few months' training in Dublin she was sent to India, where on May 24, 1931, she took her initial vows as a nun.

From 1931 to 1948 Mother Teresa taught at St. Mary's High School in Calcutta, but the suffering and poverty she glimpsed outside the convent walls made such a deep impression on her that in 1948 she received permission from her superiors to leave the convent school and devote herself to working among the poorest of the poor in the slums of Calcutta. Although she had no funds, she depended on Divine Providence, and started an open-air school for slum children. Soon she was joined by voluntary helpers, and financial support was also forthcoming. This made it possible for her to extend the scope of her work.

On October 7, 1950, Mother Teresa received permission from the Holy See to start her own order, "The Missionaries of Charity", whose primary task was to love and care for those persons nobody was prepared to look after. In 1965 the Society became an International Religious Family by a decree of Pope Paul VI.
Today the order comprises Active and Contemplative branches of Sisters and Brothers in many countries. In 1963 both the Contemplative branch of the Sisters and the Active branch of the Brothers was founded. In 1979 the Contemplative branch of the Brothers was added, and in 1984 the Priest branch was established.

The Society of Missionaries has spread all over the world, including the former Soviet Union and Eastern European countries. They provide effective help to the poorest of the poor in a number of countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, and they undertake relief work in the wake of natural catastrophes such as floods, epidemics, and famine, and for refugees. The order also has houses in North America, Europe and Australia, where they take care of the shut-ins, alcoholics, homeless, and AIDS sufferers.

The Missionaries of Charity throughout the world are aided and assisted by Co-Workers who became an official International Association on March 29, 1969. By the 1990s there were over one million Co-Workers in more than 40 countries. Along with the Co-Workers, the lay Missionaries of Charity try to follow Mother Teresa's spirit and charism in their families.

Mother Teresa's work has been recognised and acclaimed throughout the world and she has received a number of awards and distinctions, including the Pope John XXIII Peace Prize (1971) and the Nehru Prize for her promotion of international peace and understanding (1972). She also received the Balzan Prize (1979) and the Templeton and Magsaysay awards.

International Women's Day (IWD) is marked on March 8 every year. It is a major day of global celebration for the economic, political and social achievements of women.

Started as a political event, the holiday blended in the culture of many countries (primarily Russia and the countries of former Soviet bloc). In some celebrations, the day lost its political flavour, and became simply an occasion for men to express their love to the women around them in a way somewhat similar to Mother's Day and St Valentine's Day mixed together. In others, however, the political and human rights theme as designated by the United Nations runs strong, and political and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner.

The IWD is also celebrated as the first spring holiday, as in the listed countries the first day of March is considered the first day of the spring season.

The first IWD was observed on 28 February 1909 in the United States following a declaration by the Socialist Party of America. Among other relevant historic events, it commemorates the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire (New York, 1911), where over 140 women lost their lives. The idea of having an international women's day was first put forward at the turn of the 20th century amid rapid world industrialization and economic expansion that led to protests over working conditions. By urban legend, women from clothing and textile factories staged one such protest on 8 March 1857 in New York City. The garment workers were protesting against very poor working conditions and low wages. The protesters were attacked and dispersed by police. These women established their first labor union in the same month two years later.

More protests followed on 8 March in subsequent years, most notably in 1908 when 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights. In 1910 the first international women's conference was held in Copenhagen (in the labour-movement building located at Jagtvej 69, which until recently housed Ungdomshuset) by the Second International and an 'International Women's Day' was established, which was submitted by the important German Socialist Clara Zetkin, although no date was specified (). The following year, IWD was marked by over a million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. However, soon thereafter, the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in New York City killed over 140 garment workers. A lack of safety measures was blamed for the high death toll. Furthermore, on the eve of World War I, women across Europe held peace rallies on 8 March 1913. In the West, International Women's Day was commemorated during the 1910s and 1920s, but dwindled. It was revived by the rise of feminism in the 1960s.

Demonstrations marking International Women's Day in Russia proved to be the first stage of the Russian Revolution of 1917.

Following the October Revolution, the Bolshevik feminist Alexandra Kollontai persuaded Lenin to make it an official holiday in Russia, and it was established, but was a working day until 1965. On May 8, 1965 by the decree of the USSR Presidium of the Supreme Soviet International Women's Day was declared as a non working day in the USSR "in commemoration of outstanding merits of the Soviet women in communistic construction, in the defense of their Motherland during the Great Patriotic War, their heroism and selflessness at the front and in rear, and also marking the big contribution of women to strengthening friendship between peoples and struggle for the peace."

Women's Day in modern culture
The day remains an official holiday in Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cameroon, China, Cuba, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam, and is observed by men giving the women in their lives - mothers, wives, girlfriends, colleagues, etc., flowers and small gifts. In some countries it is also observed as an equivalent of Mother's Day, where children also give small presents to their mothers and grandmothers.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union celebrations of IWD were abandoned in Armenia. Instead April 7 was introduced as state holiday of ‘Beauty and Motherhood.’ The new holiday immediately got popular among Armenians, as it commemorates one of the main holidays of Armenian Church, Annunciation. However, people still kept celebrating IWD on March 8 as well. Public discussion held on the topic of two ‘Women’s Days’ in Armenia resulted in the recognition of the so called ‘Women’s Month’ which is the period between March 8 and April 7.

In Italy, to celebrate the day, men give yellow mimosas to women. Yellow mimosas and chocolate are also one of the most common March 8 presents in Russia.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Croatia, Hungary,Romania,Moldova, Macedonia, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovenia and Serbia the custom of giving women flowers still prevails. Women sometimes get gifts from their employers too. School children often bring gifts for their teachers as well.
In countries like Portugal and Romania, it is usual, at the night of 8 March, groups of women celebrate in "women-only" dinners and parties

In India, IWD holds a lot of significance. Many celebrations are held during the day. This portrays the power of women in the modern era and how vital their role is in the society.
In 1975, which had been designated as International Women’s Year, the United Nations gave official sanction to and began sponsoring International Women's Day.

The 2005 Congress (conference) of the British Trades Union Congress overwhelmingly approved a resolution calling for IWD to be designated a public holiday in the United Kingdom.

Today many events are held by women's groups around the world. The global women's organization Aurora hosts a free worldwide register of IWD local events (www.internationalwomensday.com) so that women and the media can locate local activity. Many governments and organisations around the world support IWD. For example, HSBC hosts a range of IWD activity including co-hosting of the UK's flagship IWD event with women's group Aurora. Global interest in IWD shows a steady increase.

At the US Postal Service, celebrations typically include round-table discussions of celebrations around the world, especially in Belarus. This is widely attributed to a woman from that country who pushed (unsuccessfully) for the day to become a postal holiday.

Jaipur Foot - the great path to walk

On the occasion of the 2500th death anniversary of Lord Mahaveer, known for his compassion and loving kindness for all, Shri D. R. Mehta envisioned and set up BMVSS in March 1975, as a human welfare organization. This idea of this humanitarian project was born out of a trauma. In 1969 Mr. Mehta had met with a serious car accident in which his leg was crushed.

But, despite the ominous forebodings of the surgeons, both his leg and life got saved. Dr. M. M. Bapna and Dr. Ganga Ram Purohit of Mahatma Gandhi Hospital, Jodhpur, who were his operating surgeons, would later constantly remind him of the plight of poor patients who in such situations, often lost their limbs. Once the funds could be raised and organizational structure worked out by Mr. Mehta, BMVSS was setup.

Prof. C. K. Prahalad in his book “The Fortune at the Bottom at the Pyramid” has this to say –
“BMVSS was established in March 1975 by Mr. D. R. Mehta. In the first seven years after the development of the Jaipur Foot in 1968, hardly 50 limbs were fitted. In the first year after the formation of the society, 59 limbs were fitted. Now, the number of limbs fitted every year approaches 16,000. …….If not for the value system and patient-centric management practices followed by BMVSS, Jaipur Foot might have remained on the shelf and in limbo.”

Many social workers, experts and donors were invited to join the society which they gladly did.

Though, the institution is named after Lord Mahaveer in terms of his philosophy treating all are equal, it is totally secular and non-religious and non-sectarian, where patients of all denominations are welcome and given assistance.

Hindu wedding Ceremonies are traditionally conducted in Sanscrit. The major part of the Hindu religion across India follows 13 steps of Hindu Vadic Wedding Ceremony.

Vara Satkaarah - Reception of the bridegroom and his kinsmen at the entrance gate of the wedding hall where the officiating priest chants a few mantras and the bride's mother blesses the groom with rice and trefoil and applies tilak of vermilion and turmeric powder. In South India, people call this as Thota Lanchanam. Kasi Prayana follows after this.
Madhuparka Ceremony - Reception of the bridegroom at the altar and bestowing of presents by the bride's father.
Kanya Dan - The bride's father gives away his daughter to the groom amidst the chanting of sacred mantras.
Vivah-Homa - The sacred fire ceremony ascertaining that all auspicious undertakings are begun in an atmosphere of purity and spirituality.
Pani-Grahan - The groom takes the right hand of the bride in his left hand and accepts her as his lawfully wedded wife.
Pratigna-Karan - The couple walk round the fire, the bride leading, and take solemn vows of loyalty, steadfast love and life-long fidelity to each other.
Shila Arohan - The mother of the bride assists her to step onto a stone slab and counsels her to prepare herself for a new life.
Laja-Homah - Puffed rice offered as oblations into the sacred fire by the bride while keeping the palms of her hands over those of the groom.
Parikrama or Pradakshina or Mangal Fera - The couple walk around the sacred fire(Homa Kundam) seven times. This aspect of the ceremony legalizes the marriage according to the Hindu Marriage Act as well custom.
Saptapadi - Marriage knot symbolized by tying one end of the groom's scarf with the bride's dress. Then they take seven steps representing nourishment, strength, prosperity, happiness, progeny, long life and harmony and understanding, respectively.
Abhishek - Sprinkling of water, meditating on the sun and the pole star.
Anna Praashan - The couple make food offerings into the fire then feed a morsel of food to each other expressing mutual love and affection.
Aashirvadah - Benediction by the elders.
